Open Letter to the LMS Community

Huge news!

Dear Mowers,

We were a bit nervous about what you’d say when the new DLC and quality of life update was announced for Lawn Mowing Simulator.

Obviously, it’s been a little while since the previous update, and while we know that you’ve still been playing and talking about the game, we didn’t know if you’d be excited at new content, angry because of the long gap, or anything in-between.

In reality, you’ve been really kind and gracious with your comments, and we’re really grateful for your response!

So – why are we doing it?

Well, the first thing to say is that nobody is paying us to make this content – this was something that we wanted to do to bridge the gap between the first and second games.

Wait, what? Yes, you read that right – more on that in a moment!

For LMS1 we very much enjoyed working with Curve Games, who invested money into the development and marketing of that game and supported us through a great post-release odyssey of new platforms, new content and new ideas – and Curve will continue to be the publisher for LMS1.

However, for *drum roll* Lawn Mowing Simulator 2… we’re letting you know before anybody else… we will be self-publishing.

But what does “self-publishing” mean? Essentially, it means that as an indie studio we will be taking all the risk for the project ourselves (which is scary), but it also means we will have complete ownership of the project and control over the direction we take (which is amazing).

Now, that doesn’t mean that we will do literally everything ourselves – we will likely work with partners along the way where it makes sense, but we will be driving… and we’re inviting you along for the ride!

We’re sure that many of you will have a sense that the videogames industry is in a tough spot right now, and you’re not wrong. There are a lot of games being cancelled and jobs being lost – and in some ways that makes our decision to self-publish even more terrifying.

However – we believe that developers publishing their own games will be something that you’ll see more and more in the future, and with the right expertise as well as feedback and support from a wonderful community (which is you), we’re confident that we can navigate the challenges ahead.

With this in mind, we want the development process for LMS2 to be really transparent, so expect lots of communication from us about what’s going on (both the good and not so good!) – and as well as announcing LMS2 today to our closest community friends, we want to give you a top-level overview of how we’re planning out the development of the game.

First up, while we have enough funding to create a game we feel will be worthy of the LMS2 name, we’ve had a few folks ask if there were ways they could get more involved in supporting future content.

To that end, we’re planning to run a Kickstarter campaign towards the end of 2025 – if successful, the money raised will go towards improving and expanding the plans we already have. So to be clear, we’re not doing what some teams do and pretend that the target we set will ‘get us over the line’ – but it will definitely help us to polish it further, while also giving some of you the chance get involved and pick up some exclusive rewards… and maybe even be immortalised in the game itself…

As of a few minutes ago, the Coming Soon page has now gone live, so to keep updated with news and make sure you’re informed when the Kickstarter campaign is going to launch, please click here and sign up for notifications!

We’ll be looking for feedback on exactly what the Kickstarter rewards will consist of, so please join our new Discord to let us know your thoughts and join us on the journey! The reason we’re using a different Discord for the sequel is just because the LMS1 Discord is part of the Curve Games platform, whereas the new one is ours!

Finally, to give you a sense of timings, we’re currently planning to get to a release point around this time next year. We’ve already been in pre-production for the game for a little while alongside work on the LMS1 DLC and update, and pretty soon we’ll start to share some of the headline changes you can look forward to.

So thanks from all of us here at Skyhook Games – because of your support for LMS1 we have the chance to build on that, and this is an opportunity that is really precious to us.
