Audio Recording is a WRAP!

A really important part of authenticity in a game such as Lawn Mowing Simulator 2 is the audio. More specifically, it’s capturing the accurate sounds of the real-life equipment so that what you hear in the game is as close to the real thing as possible.

A couple of months ago we posted an article talking about one of the trips we made to capture audio, and last week we completed our series of visits to equipment distributors who have been helping us in our task.

Capturing authentic audio is actually much more difficult than you might think – it’s not just a case of walking up to a mower and pointing a microphone at it… To get enough audio sources to be able to create realistic sound mixes later on takes a lot of equipment for each mower!

For those of you who are into your audio capture, this is the kit we’ve been using:

Recorders

  • Sound Devices MixPre6
  • Sound Devices MixPre3
  • 2x Zoom F3

Microphones

  • Sennheiser MKH 416
  • Aston Stealth
  • Clippy EM272 Pair
  • LOM Usi Pair
  • AKG C411
  • LOM Geophone

At any one time the team had 7 or 8 microphones attached to, or pointing at, the mower to ensure capturing the audio at all levels. Some microphones ensure we get the low end of the noise while others are tailor made to catch the high end.

Multiple versions of every sound were captured to make sure there were clean recordings that could be used for the game, with the team spending hours capturing start up beeps, engine ignitions and blade loops for every piece of equipment in the game.

Having collected together all of the raw audio from a number of these trips over the past few months, it’s now all with our audio partners at PitStop Productions. They’ve got loads of experience in generating mixes that we can then incorporate back into the game – so that when you turn on a mower, turn, change your speed, or anything else… it sounds just like the real thing!
