Gwil’s work experience at skyhook games!
Over the last few months, University of Liverpool student, Gwil has been completing his work experience placement with us! His time here has now drawn to a close, so let’s find out how he enjoyed it!
How have you found your time at Skyhook?
I’ve had a wonderful time! It’s been fascinating to learn about the video game industry and the people who work in it, and to compare this first-hand experience with my previous impressions. By the end of my placement, I’ve found myself full of hope. I would encourage anyone with an interest in games to apply!
How has your time here helped you?
In the field of promotion, this placement has massively helped improve my video editing and copywriting skills. More generally, it has helped me collaborate with a large team, meet deadlines, and grow accustomed to office work. Most of all, the placement has shown me that a place in the video game industry is worth fighting for.
From an outside perspective, the inner workings of the video game industry seem almost completely hidden from view, with its public image instead defined by vast publishers. Video games have been a wonderful part of my life for as long as I can remember, and I was worried that the challenges of development would erode that passion. My time here has taught me that many of the challenges I’d heard about—hostile fans, mass redundancies, strange publisher decisions—are very much real. More than that, however, it has helped me see that there are people doing their absolute best to make the industry a kinder, more approachable place. For that, I am eternally grateful.
Was there any aspect you particularly enjoyed?
I loved speaking with the different members of the team and finding out what interests and inspires them. Whenever I’ve had the chance to speak with members of the industry in the past, I’ve often felt out of my depth, as though I were prodding them with too many questions. By contrast, everyone I’ve spoken to at Skyhook made time for me, which I found really welcoming.
How would you summarise your placement?
I was asked to produce a variety of promotional videos for Skyhook’s social media accounts. My videos mostly focused on the Train Sim World series, I’m a lot more knowledgeable about trains now!
There was a mixture of individual and collaborative work. I was given the freedom to come up with ideas for videos, as well as the guidance and support needed to create them. I felt like a valued member of the team!
